The season of 2009 in River Reisa - the second-best in decades

The season of 2009 in Reisa River was the second-best season in decades, after the 2008 season, where the catch was about 12.1 tonnes.
The total catch of salmon was about 8.1 tons in 2009, of which 2.7 tons or 33.5% of the catch was released. This is a new record for the River Reisa. What is particularly for last year's season is that a majority of the catch consists of big Atlantic salmon, and then we mean BIG salmon. The biggest caught salmon weighed a total of 23 kilograms, and was taken in Zone 2 on the 27th of July. 5 of 10 salmon that were caught during the season weighed over 7 kg, and the average weight was about 6.2 kg. There were caught an amount of 619 salmon weighing more than 7 kg. Many of the caught salmon was really big, and we have noted a released female salmon weighing more than 20 kg! Female Atlantic salmon of this size is quite unusual. Here are the 10 largest salmon on our list: 23.0 kg, 21.0 kg, 20.6 kg, 20.2 kg, 20.0 kg, 19.1 kg, 19.0 kg, 19.0 kg, 18.6 kg, and 18.4 kg. Besides this, it was caught 687 Atlantic salmons weighing less than 7 kg.

When it comes to sea trout there were caught about 900 kg in 2009. This is a small increase from 2008. Average weight was about 1.3 kg, and the largest sea trout was about 5.5 kg. We note also that it was caught a lot of sea trout between 3 and 5 kg. The catch of sea trout increased sharply in week 36, and was very good the last two weeks of the season (first half of September). The Arctic char are still protected in the River Reisa.
